DETERMINING ARROW SIZE & LENGTH

Choosing Your Arrows in 2 Quick Steps

Selecting your arrows might seem easy, but it is a crucial step. The wrong arrow can damage your bow, void its warranty, and even result in painful injuries. The archery outfitters of Shooters Sports Center will ensure you get the right tools for the job.

1. Finding the Right Arrow Length

Imagine you’re about to fire an arrow. You nock it, set it, and drawback. But when you draw your bow your arrow slips off the rest and goes…Right through the back of your hand. Ouch. What went wrong?

You’re using a compound bow so you couldn’t have overdrawn. This could only be caused by trying to fire an arrow that was too short.

A painful accident like this can easily be avoided. In order to find your ideal arrow length simply find your draw length plus .5” to 1”. That’s it! The right-sized arrow can make or break your shot. The archery outfitters of Shooters Sports Center will ensure you get the right arrow for your bow.

2. Finding the Right Arrow Weight

The spine, vanes, nock, insert, and tip all affect the weight of your arrow. Your ideal arrow weight depends on the draw weight of your bow and the type of archery you’ll be doing. Target archers will want a lower grain arrow, while hunters will prefer a higher one.

No matter what type of archery you’re doing, you’re safe with between 5 and 8 grains per pound of draw weight. If your bow has 50lbs of draw, you’ll want an arrow with between 250 and 400 grain. Our archery outfitters will help you find the perfect arrow for your bow.

We strongly caution against using arrows less than 5 grains per pound of draw. These low grain arrows often void warranties, and can even break under high pound draw.

The Range

We have a great park-like setting for our 60-Yard Outdoor Range that is 100 Feet Wide with Picnic Tables, Practical Bow Hangers and Firing Line Markings.  The range is available to Compound/Recurve archers and is typically set up with both 4'x4' target bales at 10 Yard increments, as well as a variety of Rinehart 3D Targets available throughout the summer and fall.  For those Crossbow archers, there is a target bale designed for most available crossbows.

Our Indoor Ranges are two-fold: First is a standard 20-Yard Range that has TV Monitors at the 20 Yard Line for those that want to see every shot count down range.  The 20-Yard Range also has a crossbow target rated for 650FPS.  The 2nd Indoor Range is a 10-Yard Range that is set up for lessons, Paper-Tuning, Chronographing your arrow speed, as well as testing out a new bow.
